Hands-On Calorimetry for Chemical Reactivity Training

On Monday, October 13, and Tuesday, October 14, 2025, join us to learn the principles and characteristics of the Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC®) instrument. Participants will engage in hands-on equipment operation and learn data analysis techniques, particularly in interpreting thermal profiles and identifying critical reaction points such as TMR (Time to Maximum Rate) and SADT (Self-Accelerating Decomposition Temperature). Through a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory exercises, participants will learn how adiabatic thermal runaway data can improve process safety. Safety assessments for setup, operation modes, key materials, and performance checks will be included.

The Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC®) is considered a key tool for assessing chemical reactivity and ensuring process safety. This instrument is used in the chemical manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and battery industries to assess the thermal stability of materials, identify potential runaway reaction risks, and optimize process conditions for safe handling.

This in-person course will be facilitated by Abdo Iskandar, Ph.D., and Ehab Shaaban, Ph.D., both experienced chemists who consult for major oil, gas, and petrochemical manufacturers worldwide. They frequently serve as consultants on incident investigation teams, developing a chemical testing and analytical work plan to better understand the potential reactions or decompositions that might have contributed to the occurrence.

Who Should Attend

This course is suited for experienced process safety engineers or risk management professionals looking to advance their knowledge in chemical reactivity and minimize the threat of runaway reactions. It is ideally suited for those working in chemical manufacturing, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, plastic, food, and battery technology industries.
