Chemical Reactivity Testing

ioKinetic testing can help you define chemical reaction hazards associated with expected and undesired reactions. This data is often used to meet process safety management (PSM) regulatory requirements, such as process limits, fine-tune process specifications and complete emergency relief system (ERS) design. Chemical reactivity testing will assist you in reducing hazards that you may otherwise not be aware of, and help you comply with regulatory standards.

Safe design and operation of chemical processes requires a thorough understanding of chemical reactivity and thermokinetics. ioKinetic offers a 3 step approach, applicable for relief system design, process optimization, and chemical reactivity hazard evaluation.

ioKinetic 3-Step Approach to Sizing Relief Systems for Reactive Systems

Chemical reactions with a significant release of heat, gas and/or toxic materials have the potential to cause harm to people, property or the environment. Watch the video to see the ioKinetic 3-step systematic approach to sizing relief systems for reactive systems.

Our 3-Step Approach

Step 1: Chemical reactivity evaluation

  • Conduct a closed small-scale adiabatic test (e.g. ARC®, APTACTM)

Step 2: Develop a kinetic model that simulates the adiabatic test

  • Define reaction stoichiometry using measured vapor-liquid equilibrium
  • Define a reaction model

Step 3: Predict behavior in the full-scale vessel

  • Use the developed stoichiometry and reaction model
  • Simulate the actual full-scale vessel
  • Complete process optimization, pressure relief system design (including inlet and outlet piping)
