Automatic Pressure Tracking Adiabatic Calorimetry Testing

APTAC data is used for reactive system process characterization, pressure relief system design, defining safe upper and lower limits, batch and semi-batch reaction process simulation, and physical property definition.

Understanding the pressure/temperature behavior of a reactive system is critical to designing processes and their safety systems. An APTAC™ measures the adiabatic pressure and temperature versus time response of a reactive system. Due to its unique pressure balancing system and larger sample size, it has a low thermal inertia, similar to a full-scale reactor or storage vessel. During an exothermic event, the system will achieve more real-life adiabatic and temperature rise rates, better imitating the actual vessel being evaluated. Data can be directly applied to larger vessels with little scale-up correction.

Building on the calorimetry expertise included in the Accelerating Rate Calorimeter (ARC®), the advanced APTAC instrument has additional capabilities to perform experiments requiring low self-heat rate detection, reactant injection, vented operation, isothermal aging and gas / solid phase reaction analysis. Data can be used to complete pressure relief and flare systems design, simulate batch and semi-batch reaction processes, and define physical properties.

Pressure relief sizing data is generated by the APTAC™ using the venting capability. This simple vent test gives information about maximum temperature and pressure reached, rates of temperature and pressure rise, gas and vapor production. Test data can be used for vent sizing using the DIERS simplified method.
